110th Infantry

1985.201 State Color Horstmann Brothers and Company v2p366
110th Infantry, First State Color. Composed of men from Blair, Huntingdon, Bedford, Philadelphia, Centre and Clearfield counties, the 110th was organized during the fall of 1861 and they received their flag on December 1, 1861. Due to a bitter rivalry between city-boys and country-boys, reinforced by the fact all but one of the officers were from Philadelphia, a riot broke out in January 1862 over who would be the color-bearer. More than 40 soldiers were killed or maimed. Many soldiers re-enlisted during the winter of 1863-64 and the flag may have been retired from service when taken to Harrisburg by the men on furlough. The regiment was mustered out of service on June 28, 1865.
